Pan’s Labyrinth
Go and see this movie! Go tonight! Go tomorrow! I don’t care, just go see it.
It’s a wonderfully disturbing film that blends the lyrical beauty of the fantastic with some of the harshest realities of life. The fantasy element of the story is basically a grab-bag of every fantasy trope under the sun, but not in a bad Harry Potter way. (What? Back up that argument? Nah…)
The only problem is that it’s in Spanish (subtitled), which in itself isn’t really that much of a problem if you can read above a primary school level. No, the trouble stems from the fact that because of the film’s supposed inaccessibility to a mass audience, it’s only playing at trendy indie cinemas like Kino or Cinema Europa (at least in Melbourne), so you have to put up with saturnine hipsters who do things like laugh extra loud at Stella Artois ads (in French), just so everyone in the theatre knows that they understand French. True story.

Don’t slag me off Daniel, it was a funny ad!
I think I’ll try and do a review on this movie soon. But because of my crappiness I think I’ll see a few more movies and do a bit of a medley to help. Quanity over quality and all that.
“Here’s one: 5,000 words on why you’ll stay the FUCK out of my home!”
I went to see End of Evangelion at one of those arthouse cinema places. There were these two Po-mo plack leather jacket 40 year old guys there. On the way out I overheard them saying ‘Delightful, wasn’t it?’ Wankers!
I also went to see Hero (subtitled) at Hoyts of some shit, and NO ONE was there coz they didn’t want to ‘read’ a movie…Is there no balance between being a dumb fuck and being a pretentious fuck?
Delightful? Delightful?! Who the fuck says delightful (other than ironically)? Wankers indeed.
I think there can be balance, Gitoku. It’s what we’re doing now, inhabiting a kind of limbo where we get to mock both the dumb and pretentious fucks.
Still haven’t decided if I liked Hero, though. Piece of shit or work of genius? Dunno.
Hero was a piece of shit! Most martial arts movies are! But that is what’s funny about them! Hero took itself too seriously.
well, chances are I won’t see it at the movies, so I’ve asked EzyDVD to email me when it’s available to order, or purchase.
Good lad.
Hey Robin I’m sure they’ll be showing it in Perth somewhere. It should be out for a little while at least.
Speaking of saturnine hipsters, in one of the youtube comments on the trailer, someone asked if it was in a different language. Someone replied with ‘Yes, it’s in Spain-accented Spanish’ and some other crap. My first thought was, ‘Ain’t quite so need to be a fucking poof.’ They should have just said Spanish and not been a prat about it, as though they can pick the dialect and even so, it’s not important. We don’t say films are in American-accented English or English-accented English. FUCKING PRAT!!!
Hooly: I agree with you. I hate the whole ‘It’s a Catalan accented Spanish*’ bullshit. These Euro-trash types pick up Spanish as an elective at uni then think they are fucking linguists because they could order a drink in Ibiza or some other hole I will NEVER go to.
*I don’t know if there is such a thing…
The funny thing is that whoever said that shit about ‘Spain-accented Spanish’ fucked up while trying to sound smart. I’m no expert in the Romance languages, but I’m guessing there’s probably a bit of diversity of accent throughout Spain, especially considering the mix of languages there.
As Andrew Doyle would say (nasally, almost pig-like): “Shat in your own nest!”
Dammit I see you have a new blog about M&Ms in the preview but when I go to your site there is nothing… Mirage?
That’s an old, old entry. Snap is fucking useless.
I think i might go see that tommorrow, after the thread at old school and your blog i cant miss this film.
I was holding out for hannibal but that isnt for another week.
When I first heard of this, I thought it was a sequel to Labriyinth. lol but I still enjoyed it, I loved the use of practical effects and reliance on old fashioned movie make up to make the monsters.
