A Tribute to the Hammerhead Guy from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 2′
I’ll be honest; I didn’t really get interested in Pirates 2 until I saw the action figures in K-Mart a few months ago.
They really struck me, because pirates + action figures = awesome. I’ve felt that way ever since Mattel’s Hook action figures hit back in 1991. Hook was a great movie, and the fact that an action figure was made of ’Thud Butt’ is all the proof I need that there is a God. The Hook figure line doesn’t get much respect from toy collectors, which is good for me cos I think I’m like the only person in the world actively collecting it, so I’ve managed to get some pretty good deals.
Anyway, back to P of the C.
The one figure that really impressed me was Davy Jones. I knew absolutely nothing about POTC 2 at that point, but the sight of a dude with a beard of tentacles and a giant lobster claw for an arm got me pretty interested.
Then the trailer started playing on TV, and I saw this guy:
Not the best pic, I know, but that’s how he appeared in the trailer, which can only be because Disney wanted to make him a drawcard mystery, like how Lucasfilm made Kenner black out the images of the Ewoks on the Star Wars figure cardbacks, so as not to give the game away. I would really like to think that a whole bunch of kids saw this trailer and decided they had to see this movie, if only for the hammerhead guy.
I knew from seeing Davy Jones and Hammerhead Guy that Pirates 2 was going to be something special. Sure, the last film had ghosts and undead pirates, but this one had a crew of half-man/half-sea creature freaks!
That shit is right out of an 80s cartoon, I swear.
After seeing the movie (which didn’t disappoint– Davy Jones playing that organ is one of the best things in any movie ever), I did some Googling on the hammerhead guy. Not much out there, but I did find out that his name is ‘Maccus’, which I thought was dumb at first. Turns out, though, that it’s a Celtic word for ‘hammer’, which makes more sense. Still, the Masters of the Universe fan in me wishes he had a name like ‘Hammor’ or something.
If there’s one good thing I take out of all of this, it’s a restoration of my faith in good old fashioned kids’ entertainment, which has taken a hit in recent years. Who knows- what with all the superhero movies, the Pirates movies, the Turtles and Transformers movies… maybe Hollywood can finally get the kids off that anime crap.
LMAO! I KNEW this was coming!
But yeah, The movie rocked and was the best summer movie I had seen in a long time. If Transformers is any good, I really hope they do another MOTU live-action movie and get the guys who did the makeup work on the sea pirates to do all the creatures like Beast Man and Trapjaw, etc. They’re a shoe-in for best make-up/visual effects for sure.
Dead on about this being right out of an 80’s cartoon. Maybe creativity is really returning to Hollywood.
However I must comment on your bigotry about entitling your article the Hammerhead guy, His name is MACCUS. Just because he has a skin disorder doesn’t make him any different than you or me. I’m organizing a boycott of all Hammerhead-Sapiens that read your blog!!!

And it’s interesting that you bring up Momaw Nadon, cos I love the original naming for the Cantina aliens- “Hammerhead”, “Snaggletooth”, “Walrus Man”, etc. Classic.
Can’t forget “Hole in the Head” “Elephant Man” and “Prune Face”. AND the chick with six knockers from Return of The Jedi. ; )
Yeah, Prune Face is one of my favourites.
I have his action figure, although it’s the POTF2 version, so it has his ‘real name’ (Orrimaarko). Still, it has Prune Face in brackets after that, which I think is Kenner’s way of acknowledging that the character’s only appeal is in the name.
That’s true! Who the hell would buy a dried up looking space pirate called Orrimaarko? Prune Face exudes manliness.
One of my favorite bloopers is in Jedi, When Han gives Lando the Falcon you can see a rebel solider walking up the landing ramp with his hand up a Dresslian’s (Prune Face’s species) ass! Clearly it was a puppet, But it cracks me up everytime. LOL!
It goes by real fast but if you just watch the backround you can catch it.
Dude, Maccus is downright sexy.
But yeah, after seeing the movie I spent days afterward looking up “hammerhead guy” online, and all I ever got were results for the toy and other uninteresting info.
I hope he’ll become more known in the future.

Seriously, though, check back whenever the second wave of POTC2 figures come out, cos it’s got Maccus and I’ll definitely be buying and reviewing him.
(I’m talking about the actual toys there. For kids. Action figures. Not the NECA figures for grown-ups which are ridiculous.)

I know there are at least two different versions of the figure. One of them looks more like Maccus than the other, IMO.

Yah, well, you know you can get those fan-site formats and then customise them for your particular character….most of them suck though, as they only have a short bio of the character and a few codes. Hmm, big deal. *Our* Maccus fan site would be different though. And you could have pride of place with the world’s first ever Maccus fan fic.

Dude. Dude. D-o-o-d. You would *have* to advertise that forum on IMdB. You’d get loads of people….why not make it a Flying Dutchman crew guild, and have different boards for the different characters on the same forum? That way, you’re killing a helluva lot of undead fish pirates with one stone.
Or make at least link the different fan-sites together to make an alliance of a sort, so fans of one character could progress onto the next in the crew.
I don’t have one, but I could make one easily and then advertise it. XD

OMG!!! I TOTALLY friggin’ agree!! I am in LOOOVE with Davy Jones and have that toy, I also ordered a costume for my husband and I’m dressing as calypso/tia dalma to see pics check after halloween at my site.. it’s gonna be AWESOME!!!!!!
